All About Coolant Lines for BMW Motorcycles

The network of coolant lines on your BMW motorcycle is made up of an upper radiator hose, a lower radiator hose, heater hoses, and, on some engines, a bypass hose. They connect the several parts of the cooling system to one another --namely, the engine block, the radiator, and the water pump.

So, it follows that they have to be durable, made to stand up to everything from extreme heat and vibration to systemic pressure and the various chemicals in the cooling system. Indeed, they are -- lines that aren't otherwise made of a reinforced synthetic rubber, like ethylene propylene EPDM, are comprised of hardy silicone. As a result, many last several years at a time, though some can last even longer.

No coolant line lasts forever, though. Environmental extremes can eventually crack or split them or cause them to bulge and soften, and that can often lead to damaged connective ends. The result: usually, a coolant leak.

When these things happen, your best option is to replace the coolant lines altogether. Your best choice is genuine OEM; what BMW Motorrad manufactures for its bikes is designed to fit them perfectly, after all -- and that guarantee, you may not always get on the aftermarket. If you need help installing anything, feel free to schedule a service appointment at a BMW bike dealer.
