All About Water Pumps for BMW Motorcycles

The water pump on your BMW motorcycle is a complex, but highly-efficient way to cool your engine so that it runs its very best without overheating and breaking down. How it does that is simple.

How Motorcycle Water Pumps Work

The pump pushes a water-and-coolant solution from water jackets located in the engine, circulating that fluid to the radiator and then back to the engine. The fluid routes through small plates during its trip through the radiator, with wind colling to liquid down as it passes through those plates. A thermostat measures the engine's temperature to determine how much of the cooling fluid needs to pass through the engine.

While a water pump cools your motorcycle's engine much more efficiently -- and quickly -- than air cooling does, it also involves more parts. That, in turn, leads to a greater need for maintenance. After all, if your water pump starts to fail you're much likelier to have an overheated engine. That, we don't have to tell you, isn't a good thing.

How to Tell Your Water Pump Has Problems

Age or wear-and-tear can lead a seal to fail, which lets coolant leak out. Other signs of trouble range from the obvious, like an overheating engine or lit "Check Engine" warning light, to more subtle clues like a whining or grinding noise coming from the engine. Don't risk catastrophic failure, though. Check your water pump's condition on a regular basis to avoid issues.
